UPCOMING EVENT:
PET/CT Scanning on the Horizon
Wednesday, 14 October 2009
Cancer patients in the Auckland region will soon have ready access to leading-edge diagnostic technology to guide life-saving treatments, with the decision by the University of Auckland and Mercy Radiology to establish a world-class cancer research, diagnosis and treatment facility in Auckland. A consortium comprising the University, Mercy Radiology and imaging technology and solutions provider, Siemens Healthcare, today announced a three-year plan to install two world-class scanners and a radio-isotope production machine in the city.
The first stage of the project will be the establishment of a Positron Emission Tomography – CT (PET-CT) scanner at Mercy Radiology’s Epsom site – the first in the city and the second only to be established in New Zealand. A second PET-CT scanner will be installed at the University in approximately 18 months, and the radio-isotope producer, termed a Cyclotron, is also planned for 2011.
PET-CT scanning enables significantly improved identification and tracking of cancers and monitoring of cancer treatments. It provides the information to both patients and clinicians that will enable more complete decision-making about cancer treatment options. The technology combines two separate diagnostic imaging modalities, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT) into a single diagnostic tool which allows accurate fusion of the two image modalities. The major current use is in the field of cancer management. PET-CT can identify and track the spread of cancer within the body and can be used to monitor the response of tumours to therapy within a few weeks of treatment starting. It is also used in treatment planning; for example, if PET-CT shows a primary tumour has not spread there is a high probability that surgical treatment will potentially be curative. PET-CT can also be used for diagnosis of heart and other conditions, eg Alzheimer’s Disease.
